The UP Assistant Prosecution Officer (UP APO) Examination 2025 is one of the most significant recruitment opportunities for law graduates in Uttar Pradesh. Conducted by the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC), this examination selects prosecutors who represent the state in criminal courts across UP.

The UP APO Preliminary Examination was successfully held on March 22, 2026. Candidates who have cleared the prelims now have a clear target ahead: the Mains Examination, scheduled for June 28, 2026. With roughly three months remaining, a focused and structured preparation plan is the need of the hour.

Detailed Syllabus

Paper 1: General Hindi (100 Marks):

  • This paper tests Hindi language proficiency at the High School (Class 10) standard.
  • It covers essay writing (nibandh), sentence construction (vakya vinyas), and grammar (vyakaran).
  • Though treated as qualifying in many similar exams, UP APO awards full marks here — do not neglect it.

Paper 2: General English (50 Marks):

  • This paper tests English language skills at the High School standard, covering comprehension, grammar, and writing ability.

Paper 3: General Knowledge (50 Marks):

  • The GK syllabus mirrors the Preliminary Examination and covers Indian History, Geography, Polity, Current Affairs, Currencies and Capitals, and Elementary General Science.

Paper 4: Criminal Law & Procedure (100 Marks):

This is the most critical paper for the UP APO examination, given the prosecutorial nature of the post. The syllabus includes:

  • Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023
  • Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023
  • U.P. Police Act & Regulations
  • Allied Procedural Laws

Candidates must have command over both BNS/BNSS and the older IPC/CrPC, as comparative questions and transitional provisions are frequently tested.

Paper 5: Shakshya Adhiniyam — Evidence Law (100 Marks):

  • This paper is entirely devoted to the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA), 2023, which replaced the Indian Evidence Act, 1872.
  • A thorough understanding of BSA — its structure, key provisions, and departures from the old Evidence Act — is essential for scoring well here.

Paper 6: Anya Adhiniyam — Other Laws (100 Marks):

  • This paper tests knowledge of 16 special and local laws, several of which are UP-specific. The complete list is as follows:

Effective Preparation Strategy

With approximately three months between now and the Mains on June 28, 2026, candidates must work with urgency and precision. Here is a stage-wise strategy:

  • Master the New Criminal Codes First: BNS, BNSS, and BSA are the spine of Papers 4 and 5 — together worth 200 marks. Read the bare acts in full. Create comparative charts between BNS and IPC, BNSS and CrPC, and BSA and the Indian Evidence Act to identify key changes, new provisions, and retained sections. This is the single highest-priority task for this examination cycle.
  • Tackle Paper 6 Systematically: With 16 Acts to cover, divide them into clusters — central laws, UP-specific laws, and social welfare legislation. Study key definitions, offences, penalties, and procedural provisions for each Act. POCSO, UAPA, SC/ST Act, and IT Act tend to carry higher weightage given their direct relevance to prosecution work.
  • General Hindi and English: Do not treat these as afterthoughts. Paper 1 alone carries 100 marks. Practise nibandh writing, work on grammar, and ensure your written Hindi is clean and structured. For English, focus on comprehension and precise expression.
  • General Knowledge: Since the GK syllabus mirrors the Prelims, consolidate your existing notes. Focus on current legal and judicial affairs, recent legislation, and constitutional developments. Spend no more than 30–45 minutes daily on GK revision.
  • Answer Writing Practice: The Mains is entirely descriptive. Begin structured answer writing immediately. Each answer should have a brief introduction, organised body paragraphs with statutory references, and a crisp conclusion. Practise writing answers within time limits from the very first week.
  • Mock Tests and Past Papers: Attempt full-length mock tests under timed conditions at least once a week. Study previous year UP APO Mains papers to understand question patterns, frequently tested provisions, and the expected depth of answers.
  • Revision Cycles: Plan at least two full revision rounds before the exam. Use short notes and section-wise summaries for quick review in the final two weeks.

Conclusion

The UP APO Mains 2026 on June 28, 2026 is a demanding but winnable examination for candidates who approach it with clarity and discipline. Papers 4 and 5 — covering the new criminal codes BNS, BNSS, and BSA — together account for 200 marks and demand the most sustained preparation. Paper 6 tests knowledge of 16 special and UP-specific laws that are directly relevant to day-to-day prosecution practice.

With roughly three months remaining, candidates who build a clean revision schedule, practise structured answer writing, and read bare acts consistently will be best positioned to clear the Mains and advance to the interview stage. The opportunity to serve as an Assistant Prosecution Officer in Uttar Pradesh is significant — approach this final phase of preparation with full seriousness and strategic focus.
